Normally, this is when volume goes to the next contract. For example, the next contract after Dec. is March for ES, YM, ZB, etc.
Bonds will move to March before the Indices move. But your basic answer is when volume moves to the next contract.
If you have a good broker, they will help you understand when this is happening. On Trade Navigator the service that I use, the continuous contract will show a Rollover normally the day before showing you that volume is moving to the next contract in the series.
So with that being said, I have found that the best way to answer this question is either to have your broker, or the future exchange themself tell you when the contracts are expiring.
The last trade day for a contract is kind of like options ... that is why they call it a triple witch day on a Friday. Because spot, options, and futures are all coming together on that day, and this will be the last trading day.
For indices, this is normally the 3rd Friday of the month for options, and for futures the 3rd Friday of the month: Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec.
After 25 successful years trading for a living, I am giving back to those that need help in their personal day trading. My background was a trader for a major Mutual Fund Company before I went out on my own in 1997. I have been self employed ever since. I am the owner of Knight Capital Management, LLC. My current project that is entitled, "Power Profits Method." This will be a comprehensive, highly detailed "Tiger Trading Method." More details coming soon ...
